Smoked Black Peppercorns, Whole, Mr. Siew’s Malaysian

Smoked Black Peppercorns, Whole, Mr. Siew’s Malaysian

Do you love bbq food? Do you love spicy food? Do you love bacon? Are you nodding like a bobble-head? If yes, then our Malaysian Smoked Black Whole Peppercorns are for you.

I realize that there’s a good chance you know Reluctant Trading for our signature Tellicherry peppercorns from Kerala, India.

Over the years, I’ve been searching the globe to add worthy pepper companions. I’m happy to say that I’ve struck pepper gold again.

Recently, I came across a small farmer named Mr. Siew from Sarawak, Malaysia who is doing revolutionary things with peppercorns. And that’s saying something for a spice that’s been around for thousands of years.

Traditionally, fresh pepper berries are dried in the sun for several days until they turn black and hard. But Mr. Siew is a pepper pioneer (pepperneer?). He has come up with new ways to achieve exceptional flavor and texture.

Within 24 hours of harvest, Mr. Siew dries his pepper berries in pressure cookers at intense temperatures. As a result, his peppercorns retain heat (these are hotter than our Tellicherry), beautiful aroma and a pleasing dry and crackly texture.

For his Redwood Smoked Peppercorns, Mr. Siew adds an additional step. He slowly smokes the peppercorns with local mango redwood. Mr. Siew’s pepper is infused with a big, beautiful, sweet and smoky aroma that will trick your inner Homer Simpson into thinking BACON! (Even though there is no actual bacon involved.)

Look, I’m not just blowing smoke here. That’s Mr. Siew’s job. And he’s darn good at it.

Grind our Smoked Malaysian Peppercorns on meats, potatoes, eggs and anywhere you want to bring the BBQ inside.

How are these different than our Tellicherry Peppercorns?

  • Hotter than our Tellicherry
  • More dry and crackly than our Tellicherry
  • This variety is smoked and has a big, smoky, bbq aroma
  • Similar fragrance to Tellicherry
  • Smaller size peppercorns than our Tellicherry
  • World famous multi-Michelin Star chef Alain Ducasse loves Malaysian Peppercorns from Sarawak

Choices

now I have to choose between redwood smoked peppercorns from my grinder and salted pepper berries in fleur de sel sprinkled on my food. Always a fun choice.

The long pepper cones are my favorite! My large-spice grinder never leaves the countertop, because it is my favorite “luxury” seasoning to add to any dish when I want it to feel special. Much more robust bouquet than normal peppercorns!
