I had previously purchased ground white pepper from another shop and had been using it frequently in many dishes. It had quite a musky aroma, reminiscent of the hippopotamus exhibit at the local zoo if I'm being honest, but the description on the side of the bottle prepared me somewhat for the strong smell so I assumed this must be how white pepper is supposed to taste. After learning the hard way not to use a heavy hand with this particular spice, I came across an article describing The Reluctant Trading Experiment's white pepper as citrusy and bright. Not at all what I had experienced with the other brand. I ordered some right away, to compare, and opened it as soon as it arrived. The difference was astonishing. The two were absolutely nothing alike! All that time I had mostly likely been adding spoiled white pepper to my dishes and hadn't even realized it. I tossed the rest of my ground white pepper and haven't looked back. The whole white peppercorns from Reluctant Trading have a permanent spot in my spice cabinet.
This white pepper has a subtle, fresh taste. It brings out the flavor of what you season without overpowering it.
Excellent flavor and consistent in color.
Wish it was more affordable
Growing-up we always had white pepper on the spice shelf but it was a ubiquitous supermarket brand that came finely pre-ground. My mom used it in white sauces. The flavor was quite different than black pepper and I liked it--but it lacked nuance. But right now I’m eating a delicious bowl of congee that has a more than generous amount of The Reluctant Trading Experiment white pepper freshly ground on top. Oh my, this white pepper has beautifully nuanced flavor. It’s delightfully warming to the mouth rather than joltingly hot. It has a touch floral flavor with a deep white pepper flavor that tastes like nothing except, well, white pepper, only more so. White pepper has become hard to find in the grocery store and that’s a good thing because you should really buy the far superior peppers from Reluctant Trading. This has, like all of their products, a flavor profile above and beyond any supermarket brand. Try it! Oh, and while you’re at it, try the Marsala Chai blend. It is scrumptious and heady with perfectly blended spices. So delicious.
The white pepper is fantastic, both flavorful and fragrant. Will definitely re-order when I run out. P.S. I also got a great selection of other very yummy peppercorns (black, green and smoked)!
Ordering was simple and shipping was super fast. Extremely satisfied!
